Homemade Flour Tortillas

This recipe has been passed down four generations…. and these are super delish! My mother has made these growing up and mmm mmm mmm… I loved it when she made them. My mother has always been graceful in the kitchen and has taught me a great deal of tips, tricks and techniques. Thanks mom for all you have taught me! I have made these so many times that I have the recipe etched into my brain. Ain’t no one taking that from me! Ha!

So here it is… Enjoy!!!
First, prep your set up…. Heat a non-stick griddle or pan to medium high heat. Prepare your tortilla warmer or dish that will keep the tortillas covered and warm.
And now let’s get started with making the dough. Measure and mix dry ingredients till combined.

Add shortening. I use my hands to cut and incorporate to bring to a crumbly consistency.

Next, add warm water till dough forms. You want the dough pliable and not sticking to your hands.  WARNING!! DO NOT OVER HANDLE/KNEAD YOUR DOUGH! Tortillas will come out gummy and tough. Handle as little as possible.

Now, you can start rolling out the dough. Grab the desired amount dependent on the size of tortilla you want. Roll out with a rolling pin, making sure you dust a little with flour so the dough doesn’t stick to pin and counter. These are homemade so you don’t need to fret about getting a perfectly rolled tortilla. I don’t… it’s all about authenticity.IMG_1061_edited

You want these to cook quick. So you will have to watch them once you start to cook these flipping once they bubble up. IMG_1062_edited

If you leave them on too long, once they cool a bit they become hard and not so easy to bite into.IMG_1063_edited

To keep these warm use a tortilla warmer. If you don’t have one get creative and use a porcelain dish with a lid, place a towel in and cover to keep warm. Now your done! Enjoy!
